Five teenagers dead after fire in 'escape room' in Poland

WARSAW, Poland -- Five teenage girls have been killed and one man hurt in a fire that broke out at an "Escape Room" game location in northern Poland, officials said Friday. Interior Minister Joachim Brudzinski said the girls were all 15 years old.

Five teenage girls have died and one man was seriously injured after a fire broke out at an “escape room” interactive game location, in the northern Polish city of Koszalin, officials said. “The victims of this tragedy are 15-year-old children, girls celebrating a birthday,” interior minister Joachim Brudziński told broadcaster TVN24.

A police spokeswoman said on Friday the victims were probably celebrating one of their birthdays. The cause of the deadly fire has not yet been determined. The man was taken to hospital with burns and has not yet been able to be quizzed by investigators. Escape rooms are games where players are locked in a room with an hour to figure out a series of clues and riddles to get out.

A man, 25, was also seriously injured after the fire erupted in the northern Polish city of Koszalin this evening, firefighters said. “All the dead are women. One man with severe burns was taken to an intensive care unit,” fire spokesman Tomasz Kubiak said. Poland's interior minister Joachim Brudzinski said the victims were 15-year-old girls. Warsaw's president Andrzej Duda said the incident was a "crushing tragedy" after the girls died so early in life.

Fire spokesman Tomasz Kubiak confirmed that the dead were women, and told AFP that “one man with severe burns was taken to an intensive care unit”. Local police press officer Monika Kosiec told reporters that the injured man is thought to be 25 years old. Police and fire officials said they did not yet know what started the blaze in the escape room, which was reported in the early evening.

Escape rooms are popular around the world and offer a live-action experience in which players are locked in a room with one hour to figure out a series of clues and riddles to get out.
