John Legend Says He Won't Protect "A Serial Child Rapist" And He Believes R. Kelly's Accusers

JOHN LEGEND: 'I'M NO HERO FOR PARTICIPATING IN R KELLY DOCUMENTARY'

John Legend, who appears in Lifetime’s “Surviving R. Kelly” docuseries, blasted R. Kelly during his interview in the final episode, which airs on Saturday. “R. Kelly has brought so much pain to so many people,” the musician said. “#TimesUp for R. Kelly.” Legend is the only major artist to appear in the series.

In April, Legend shared his support of the #MuteRKelly movement, which was further spurred on by Women of Color of Time’s Up in an open letter that called on the music industry to cut ties with Kelly. “I stand with the women of #timesup #muterkelly,” he tweeted at the time while sharing the open letter.

LONDON - Surviving R Kelly producer Dream Hampton has described John Legend as a hero for agreeing to be interviewed for her documentary series investigating allegations of sexual misconduct against the R&B legend. Lifetime aired the first part of the six-episode expose on Thursday night which investigates long-standing allegations made against Kelly that he has sexually and physically abused women and teenage girls over a number of years, accusations he vehemently denies and has threatened legal action over.

John Legend said he wasn't worried about appearing in Lifetime’s Surviving R. Kelly documentary on Thursday night because he believed the women who have accused the R&B singer of sexual misconduct. “To everyone telling me how courageous I am for appearing in the doc, it didn't feel risky at all,” Legend wrote on Twitter. “I believe these women and don't give a fuck about protecting a serial child rapist.” Surviving R. Kelly is a six-part documentary series on Lifetime that details the many sexual assault and abuse allegations against the R&B singer, who has also been accused of pursuing sexual relationships with underage girls and was acquitted on child pornography charges in 2008. A number of women — including Lizzette Martinez, Kelly’s ex-wife Andrea Kelly, and Kelly’s longtime backup singer Jovante Cunningham — appeared in the documentary and made accusations against Kelly. "You don't even believe in your own sense of judgment after a while," Andrea Kelly told Lifetime of their relationship.
